Gavaskar’s anger erupted again for not feeding R Ashwin in WTC final
Team India’s current captain Rohit Sharma wrapped up coach Rahul Dravid
New Delhi. Team India had to face defeat by 209 runs at the hands of Australia in the final of the World Test Championship. 2 days have passed since this. But, neither the fans nor the Indian veterans are able to forget this defeat. There is a continuous debate on this defeat. There are many questions which remain the subject of discussion. For example, should India have batted first? Did Rohit-Rahul fail to understand the pitch and conditions? Apart from this, there is another question, which is being discussed the most, whether India made a big mistake by not playing Ravichandran Ashwin in the WTC final? Many veterans like Sunil Gavaskar to Ravi Shastri have questioned this strategy of Team India.
Sunil Gavaskar once again in his column written in the English newspaper Mid-Day, wrapped up the current captain Rohit Sharma, coach Rahul Dravid apart from former captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri on the decision to keep Ashwin out.
It is incomprehensible not to feed Ashwin: Gavaskar
Gavaskar wrote, “India dropped number-1 bowler R Ashwin from the playing-XI of the World Test Championship in the ICC Test rankings. The Australian team had 5 left-handed batsmen and while one left-hander – Travis Head – scored a century in the first innings, the other left-hander Alex Carey scored 48 in the first innings and 66 not out in the second. During this, Carey also shared an important 93-run partnership with the other left-handed batsman Mitchell Starc, when India was trying to dismiss Australia early in the second innings.
‘No one has been treated like Ashwin’
He further wrote, “Had Ashwin been in the team, who knows what could have happened. He could also contribute with the bat. No other top class Indian cricketer in the modern era has been treated like Ashwin. You tell me if the number-1 batsman in the ICC rankings was in the team and he was dropped just because he didn’t score runs on a green top wicket or a spinner-assisted wicket first? I can say for sure, it does not happen.

Ashwin gets dropped again and again in England
This was the sixth time when Ashwin was not kept in the playing-XI during the Test match in England. Earlier, even on India’s tour of England in 2021, he did not get a chance in all the five Tests.
Ashwin is also brought late in bowling
Gavaskar further said, “In Ashwin’s case, despite being the No.1 bowler in the world, he is not always the first spinner to be brought in to bowl. Reasons for this could be that there are right-handed batsmen at the crease now and the wind is blowing in the opposite direction and the footmarks of fast bowlers are more favorable for left-arm spinners. From this it seems as if Ashwin has dismissed only left-handed batsmen in his career.
