Despite being the defending champion, India could not win the Asia Cup.
Sourav Ganguly expressed concern over India’s poor performance in the big tournament
Will discuss with captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid
New Delhi. Despite being the defending champion, Team India could not win the title of Asia Cup. His journey ended after losing to Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super-4 round itself. It was expected that the Indian team led by Rohit Sharma would start with a win in the series against Australia. But, in the first T20 held in Mohali, the Indian bowlers could not even defend 208 runs. Now before the T20 World Cup, India has only 5 T20s to overcome its shortcomings. In such a situation, captain Rohit Sharma also wants the players to come out of their comfort zone and bring necessary changes in their game. So that the Indian team can end the 15-year drought of winning the T20 World.
Now former captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly himself has also admitted that not being able to perform well in big tournaments is a matter of concern. But, he has supported captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid. Ganguly was quoted by PTI as saying, ‘Rohit Sharma’s win percentage is around 80. India has lost the last three-four matches, but before that, Rohit captained the team in 35-40 matches and India lost only 5-6 matches.
Team’s performance in big tournaments worrying: Ganguly
Ganguly further said, ‘I am sure that Rohit and Rahul Dravid will be concerned about the current performance of the Indian team and they will improve it. I am not worried about one or two losses, but yes, we have not done well in big tournaments. We will definitely talk about it. The Indian team will leave for two to three weeks (for the T20 World Cup in Australia). He will get full time to play practice matches there and adjust to the conditions.
‘Good for Virat to return to form’
The BCCI President also praised Virat Kohli for his excellent batting in the Asia Cup. Kohli scored an unbeaten 122 off 61 balls against Afghanistan after scoring two consecutive half-centuries in the Asia Cup. After 1020 days, a century was scored in international cricket with Kohli’s bat. He scored 276 runs in 5 matches in the Asia Cup.
Ganguly said, ‘It is very good news that Virat has done well in the Asia Cup and hopefully he will continue to do so.
