India won the World Cup 40 years ago on this day
A player included in the World Cup squad did not even play a match in the tournament
New Delhi. Every player who plays cricket wants to take the field for the country and win the World Cup. But, there are only a few lucky ones who are able to fulfill this dream. Especially in a country like India, where getting a place in Team India is no less than an achievement. After doing this, if a player becomes world champion without playing a match, then what would he be called lucky or unlucky. Today this thing is because today 40 years of India’s first World Cup victory have been completed.
Under the leadership of Kapil Dev, the Indian team won the World Cup for the first time in 1983 by defeating the 2-time champion team West Indies on this day i.e. 25 June. There was such a player in this team, who became the world champion without playing a single match. The interesting thing is that this player never got an international debut. This player was left arm fast bowler Sunil Valson. Valson was selected in the Indian team for the 1983 World Cup. But, he did not play a single match in the entire tournament and became the world champion.
Born in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Sunil Walson played domestic cricket for Delhi and Railways. Valson played 75 first class matches and took 212 wickets. At the same time, this fast bowler took 23 wickets in 22 List-A matches.
When the chance to debut slipped
Sunil Valson had a chance to debut only during the 1983 World Cup. In fact, before the league match against the West Indies, Roger Binny suffered a leg injury. Then Kapil Dev had told Sunil Valson that if Binny is not fit before the match then he can get a chance. Rakhud Valson had told this in an interview given to news agency PTI a few years back. But, Binny got fit before the match and Valson’s chance to debut for India slipped away.
Was selected in the team 12 days ago
When the Indian team was selected for the 1983 ODI World Cup. At that time Sunil Walson was in England and was participating in a league in Durham. He got information about his selection in the team 12 days before the start of the tournament. That too the official of his club informed him about this.
Even though Valson could never play any match for India. But, he didn’t care about it. He believed that the World Cup was won by the entire team and he was also a part of that team.
