New Delhi. Getting five wickets in an innings in ODI cricket is considered a big achievement. In such a situation, it is difficult to believe that any bowler has done the feat of taking 5-5 wickets in three consecutive ODI matches. Pakistan Team’s fast bowler Waqar Younis made this record in 1990 and it has not been broken even after 32 years. There is little hope that this record will ever be broken.
When Waqar made this record, he was at the peak of his bowling. He took 5 wickets in the match against New Zealand (5/11 and 5/16) on 4 November and 6 November 1990 and against West Indies on 9 November (5/52). Pakistan had won all these three matches.
Kiwi batter looked helpless
In the match played on November 4, in front of Waqar’s bowling, the Kiwi team collapsed after making 127 in 37.4 overs. Waqar returned the pavilion to David White, Martin Crowe, Ken Rutherford, Deepak Patel and Danny Morrison in the match. In response, with the help of Saeed Anwar’s 67 and Rameez Raja’s unbeaten 50, Pakistan achieved the target by losing two wickets in 29.1 overs. Batting first in the match on November 6, Pakistan scored 223 runs for two wickets in the prescribed 40 overs with the help of Rameez Raja’s century (114) and Salim Malik’s unbeaten 65 runs. In response, the New Zealand team was bundled out for 118 runs in 25 overs. Waqar dismissed Deepak Patel, Grant Bradburn, Mark Priest, Chris Pringle and Willie Watson in this match.
The top order of the Indies was demolished
In the match played on November 9, the havoc of Waqar’s bowling was faced by the West Indies batters. Batting first in the match, Pakistan scored 211 runs for 5 wickets in 40 overs. Salim Malik contributed 58 and captain Imran Khan contributed 53 not out. In response, in front of Waqar’s bowling, the Indian team was able to score only 205 runs after losing 7 wickets. Out of these seven wickets, five went to Waqar’s account. In this match, he returned the pavilion to Desmond Hans, Richie Richardson, Gus Logie, Brian Lara and Carl Hoover.
Has also taken five wickets in two consecutive matches twice
Apart from this, Waqar has also taken 5-5 wickets in two consecutive matches on two occasions. In the match against Sri Lanka on 29 April 1990, he took six wickets for 26 runs and on 1 May 1990 against New Zealand, he took five wickets for 20 runs. Similarly, in June 2001 too, he took five wickets in two consecutive matches. On 17 June 2001, he took 7/36 against England and 6/59 against Australia on 19 June.
