It is perhaps the pressure of the deciding phase of IPL that the past week has been disappointing for the captains. None of the captains could do anything special with the bat or the ball. On the other hand, former KKR captain Dinesh Karthik of RCB is now considered as a ‘finisher’. He has done well in the last two matches as well. He ensured the team’s victory by playing aggressive 26 and 30 runs. It is interesting here that the first team to reach the playoffs has been decided by the match between the two new teams of the league which are on top.

IPL, uncertainty and thrill all three always appear together. This is probably the biggest reason for the popularity of this league. As of last night, except two teams, all the other teams have played 12-12 out of 14 matches, but so far only one team has reached the playoffs and two have been formally eliminated. That is, there is still a period of tussle between the remaining seven teams, some have strong chances, while some are still in the race for the playoffs for just the name. Gujarat Titans became the first team to reach the playoffs, while Chennai was formally knocked out last night after Mumbai Indians. However, in the next one or two days, the names of those three more teams will be in front of us, who are going to play the playoffs this time.
It is perhaps the pressure of the deciding phase of IPL that the past week has been disappointing for the captains. None of the captains could do anything special with the bat or the ball. Today when Royal Challengers Bangalore will face Punjab Kings in the 60th match of IPL. If RCB wins, they will reach the playoffs. Also, Lucknow Super Giants will also reach the top four. The remaining one place can go to either Rajasthan Royals or Delhi Capitals. Bengaluru had won the previous match against Sunrisers Hyderabad by a huge margin, while Punjab had to face defeat against Rajasthan. Overall, today’s match can decide the fate of number two and three teams in the league. The situation in Punjab and Kolkata is weak, there are opportunities for Hyderabad, but the work is as difficult as climbing Everest.
Last night two former winners Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians were fighting the battle of Rukhsati with honour. In this match, Mumbai easily defeated Chennai by five wickets and made a little more soil of the most popular team of the league. Mumbai avenged their previous defeat by defeating the defending champions. Curiously, he bundled out Chennai’s innings for only 97 runs. Although MS Dhoni tried his best to take the score forward, but it was in vain. In the match, Tilak Verma of Mumbai again proved that he is a contender to join the Indian team in the coming days.
It is interesting that the first team to reach the playoffs was decided by the match between the two new teams of the league which were on top. Gujarat had defeated Lucknow by a huge margin of 82 runs and on that basis they made it to the last four. In the entire season, the Gujarat team was always on top except for one round. Lucknow defeated KKR in their 11th match, then this team was once on the top on the basis of better net run rate, but later Gujarat regained the first position. The team that tops the points table in the IPL format always has an advantage, as winning only the first match of the playoffs, ie ‘Qualifier 1’, gets the team directly into the final. Therefore, if Gujarat maintains this position, then it will be beneficial for it.
Hardik Pandya is considered to be the most successful captain ever and Indian team captain Rohit Sharma is considered to be the most ineffective captain this time. It is not only in terms of captaincy, but also in terms of individual performance. In this case, except Faf du Plessis, the performance of almost all the captains this week was disappointing. Du Plessis played an unbeaten 73 for Bengaluru in their 67-run win against Hyderabad. In contrast, the performance of the rest of the captains this week was not commendable at all. If Sanju Samson could not go beyond 23 runs, Mayank Agarwal got stuck on 15. Shreyas Iyer stopped on the score of 6 both times, while Rohit Sharma was limited to 2 and 18. If Hardik Pandya could score 11 runs, then Lokesh Rahul could add only 0 and 8 runs. When Kane Williamson fell victim to zero, MS Dhoni could score 21 and 36. While Rishabh Pant could reach the figures of 21 and 13 runs. Hardik is the only ‘bowling captain’ of the league this time but could bowl only one over in the last match after not bowling five consecutive matches.
On the other hand, the former captain of KKR, Dinesh Karthik of RCB is now considered a ‘finisher’. He has done well in the last two matches as well. He ensured the team’s victory by playing aggressive 26 and 30 runs.
Young batsmen Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill opened the mouth of their bat so that their team won. Yashasvi gave Rajasthan victory by scoring 68 runs against Punjab, while Shubman Gill made a big contribution in winning Gujarat by scoring 63 runs against Lucknow.
Lucknow’s Quinton de Kock, Delhi’s David Warner and Mitchell Marsh also scored half-centuries during this period. The 30-year-old Marsh was considered ‘out dated’ for the time being but he made a mark with his 89 against Rajasthan. But Ashwin scored 50 against Delhi and padikkal scored 48 runs but his team could not win. Andre Russell will be the most disappointed, as he could not save Kolkata from defeat even after taking two wickets apart from scoring 45 runs against Lucknow with the help of five sixes in just 17 balls. Ishan Kishan also finally played two consecutive good innings, but despite the first half-century after eight matches, the Mumbai Indians team lost. Yesterday also Ishaan could add only six runs.
Despite Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant performance of taking five wickets against KKR, Mumbai had to face defeat against Kolkata. Yuzvendra Chahal, Avesh Khan, Pat Cummins, Jason Holder apart from other bowlers, Rashid Khan and Daniel Sams bowled well and contributed to their team’s victory.
KKR’s Sunil Narine has become one of those players who have scored 1000 runs apart from taking 100 wickets in IPL. But at the moment neither his bat nor the ball is running.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja due to injury and Prithvi Shaw will not be able to play the rest of the matches due to fever. Jadeja’s case is only of injury or it is difficult to say anything else because after the new developments, Jadeja has stopped following CSK on ‘Instagram’.
Apart from IPL – In September, the Australian team will visit India and play a series of T20 matches. After this, Australia will tour India again in February-March and will also play four Test matches.
On the other hand, Cheteshwar Pujara, away from the hustle and bustle of IPL in the English County Championship, is consistently scoring century on century. Pujara, playing for Sussex, has scored centuries in all four matches. In the previous match, he scored an unbeaten 170 in the second innings against Middlesex. But the purpose for which the captain had declared the innings before the completion of the double century was not fulfilled and Sussex suffered a seven-wicket defeat.
Pujara has scored more than 717 runs so far. Now he has a chance to score big again in the ongoing match against Leicestershire. Sussex’s batting is going on and today they can be seen batting on the second day. Mohammad Rizwan of Pakistan is also playing with him but he is running unsuccessfully. In the latest match, he has not got a place in the last eleven. In the last match, Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled against Pujara, but the bowler who took India out of the 2021 T20 World Cup did not face Pujara.
This is the first time in the last few months that no match of Indian domestic cricket was played. The situation will remain the same next week as well.
