Sri Lankan spinner made Paul Stirling his 50th victim
Jayasuriya, 31, took 12 wickets in his debut Test match.

New Delhi. It is said that records are made to be broken. You must have heard this often. Sri Lankan spin bowler Prabhath Jayasuriya has created history in the Galle Test match against Ireland (SL v IRE Test). Jayasuriya has destroyed the 71-year-old record by dismissing Ireland’s batsman Paul Sterling. Jayasuriya has become the first spinner in the world to take the fastest 50 wickets in Test cricket. He made this record in his 7th Test match.

Prabadh Jayasuriya broke the 7-decade-old record of West Indies spinner Alf Valentine, who took 50 wickets in the fewest matches. Former Windies left arm spinner Valentine set this record on 31 December 1951. He completed the half-century of wickets in 8 Test matches. Jayasuriya, 31, made his Test debut last year. In the debut Test match, Jayasuriya took 12 wickets for 177 runs, which was the fourth best performance by a debutant.

Prabadh Jayasuriya took 7 wickets in Galle Test match
Left arm spinner Prabadh Jayasuriya took 5 wickets in the first innings against Ireland in the Galle Test match. This was the sixth time in his Test career that he took 5 or more wickets in an innings. In the second innings, he took 2 wickets in his name. Alf Valentine took 50 wickets in the fourth Test match of the series on the tour of Australia. This was the 8th Test match of his career. Jayasuriya would now like to get 100 wickets in the least number of matches.

Lohmann is the fastest to 100 wickets
The record of the fastest 100 wickets in Test matches is in the name of former England fast bowler George Lohmann, who achieved this feat in his 16th Test match. This record among spin bowlers is in the name of 4 bowlers including former Australia leg-spinner Clarrie Grimmett and Yasir Shah of Pakistan, who have done this feat in their 17th Test match. Jayasuriya equaled South Africa’s Vernon Philander and England’s Tom Richardson as the fastest bowlers to take 50 overall wickets in Test cricket. Both fast bowlers have taken 50 wickets in their seventh Test match. Philander achieved this feat in the year 2012 while Richardson achieved it in 1896.
