new Delhi. head coach of Indian women’s team Ramesh Pawar (Ramesh Powar)’s contract ended with the end of the team’s campaign in the ICC World Cup. As per the rules of BCCI (Cricket Board of India), they will have to apply for this post again. A disappointing World Cup campaign could bring a paradigm shift in women’s cricket as the National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief VVS Laxman (VVS Laxman) is actively participating in grooming the next generation of cricketers of the country. The Indian women’s team did not even reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.
Ramesh Pawar replaced WV Raman who had led the team to the T20 World Cup final in 2020. A senior BCCI source told PTI on condition of confidentiality, “Pawar’s contract was till the World Cup. There is no provision for extension of contract. So the whole process will start from application filling and interview. Powar can certainly fill the application again and the CAC (Cricket Advisory Committee) will decide on it as per the constitution.
Raman was not given a second stint after his good performance with the team and Pawar was brought back while the differences between captain Mithali Raj and them are well known. The source said, “The CAC decides and if they felt that Ramesh would be better than Raman then it was their decision. The board cannot interfere.
There were serious differences between the two senior players towards the end of India’s campaign in New Zealand. Pawar too did not do much to defuse the tension and it remains to be seen whether he is given the contract again. In both the stints with Ramesh Pawar’s team, especially in the current tenure, the Indian team lost every series under his guidance and then got out of the World Cup.
With the Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup slated to be played next year, the BCCI wants to create the next generation of players with Laxman playing a big role in creating a ‘model’ for success in the long run. The biggest concern is to find a player to replace experienced fast bowler Jhulan Goswami. Sources said, ‘This is also a problem before the board. Hope the Indian Premiere for Women will help in grooming the talent for the future. Laxman and men’s team head coach Rahul Dravid are expected to be consulted on the way forward.
