Indian Test team vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane is currently struggling with his form. He was also dropped from the playing XI for the last match of the two-match Test series against New Zealand. However, the BCCI cited hamstrings as the reason behind it. After being dropped from the playing XI, now the vice-captaincy in Tests can also be snatched from Rahane. The BCCI may replace Rahane as the vice-captain of the Test team for the upcoming South Africa tour. T20 captain Rohit Sharma is leading in this race. BCCI may announce it soon.
According to a report in InsideSports, Rahane took charge of the team in the absence of Virat last year and led the team to a historic series win in Australia. But in recent times, he has been battling his poor form. In 2021, Rahane has scored only 407 runs in 12 Test matches at an average of 20.35, while last year his bat had scored 272 runs in four matches at an average of 38.86.
Captain Rahane has played six matches and under his captaincy the team has not lost any match, while winning four. However, due to poor form, he may be stripped of the responsibility of vice-captaincy for the upcoming South Africa tour. KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma are strong contenders for the vice-captaincy in the Test team. But there are reports that Rohit may get the responsibility of the vice-captain. India is scheduled to play three Tests, three ODIs and four T20 Internationals on the South Africa tour from December 17.
