RCB appoints Ben Sauer as coach in Women’s Premier League
New Delhi. RCB has announced the name of its head coach after Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza was appointed as the mentor of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team for the first season of the Women’s Premier League. Australia’s Ben Sawyer, the current coach of the New Zealand women’s cricket team, has been made the head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the Women’s Premier League to be held next month.
Ben Sawyer is also the current coach of Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred. Prior to this, he has also worked as an assistant coach with the Australian women’s cricket team. At the same time, she has also worked as the head coach of the Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). Australia’s women’s team has won 3 World Cups under his coach. He is a fast bowling expert. Sawyer has also won the Big Bash League title with the Sydney Sixers. His team has also made it to the final of The Hundred,
RCB’s cricket director Mike Hesson said in a video shared on the team’s Twitter handle, Ben Sauer has been associated with women’s cricket for the last 20 years. They understand women’s cricket much better. Along with this, his understanding and knowledge about the players is also deep. He has also been involved in our preparations ahead of the auction. Sauer will be assisted by Maloran Rangarajan (Assistant Coach and Head of Scouting), VR Vanitha (Scout and Fielding Coach) and RX Murali (Batting Coach).
The team manager and doctor for the tournament will be Dr Harini while Navnita Gautam (Head Athletic Therapist), Huzefa Talib (Strength and Conditioning Coach), Sabyasachi Sahoo (Chief Physio) and Soumyadeep Payne (Head of Operations) are the other support staff.
Earlier, RCB had appointed veteran tennis player Sania Mirza as the mentor of the team for the WPL to be held in Mumbai from March 4 to 26. RCB will start their campaign against Delhi Capitals on March 5 at the Brabourne Stadium. In the first WPL auction held on Monday, Bengaluru fielded a strong squad comprising Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Sophie Devine, Richa Ghosh and Dan van Niekerk.
