Sachin Tendulkar was the teacher and Virender Sehwag was the disciple.

Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar in an interview on how to open in ODIs? A story related to this was told. In this interview, Sehwag told the reason for the breakup of their pair was the quarrel between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Now you too must be thinking that there used to be a fight between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law even in Team India. So it is not like that at all. In fact, Sehwag jokingly blamed coach John Wright and captain Sourav Ganguly for this.
Sachin-Sehwag opened for the first time in ODIs in 2002
Sehwag had said in an interview to Vikram Sathe, “In 2002, Sachin Tendulkar and I opened the innings together for the first time in ODIs. Then the England team came on a tour of India. We got the team off to a good start in the ODIs against England. But, after this Captain Ganguly and coach John Wright parted our pair by plotting a mother-in-law-daughter-in-law. However, from the 2003 World Cup, our pair was reunited and after that it lasted for years and years.
How did Sehwag become Sachin’s opening partner again?
In the same interview, Sachin-Sehwag had also revealed how both of them opened the innings again for India in ODIs. Sachin had said, “We had toured New Zealand before the 2003 World Cup. But my performance was poor. I was disappointed about it. After that we came to South Africa for the World Cup. I batted at number 4 in the practice match. We lost the practice match. So coach John Wright panicked. One day he came to my room and asked me at which number you will bat. I said that I am ready to play at any number as per the requirement of the team. If you want to know my personal opinion, then I would like to open.
Sachin Tendulkar got success in the sixth time, I achieved it in 1 time, what did Virat Kohli say…
Indian opening pair was decided by draw of lots
Sehwag further said, “Sachin and Ganguly opened the innings in the opening matches of the 2003 ODI World Cup. We lost to Australia in the league stage. Our effigies were burnt in India. After this there was a match with Zimbabwe in Harare. In the team meeting before this match, John Wright asked all the players to put slips to choose the opening pair. Then 14 slips out of 15 were in the name of me and Sachin and only one slip was in the name of Sourav Ganguly. It was from here that I and Sachin again started opening in ODIs and you all know what happened after that. We even reached the finals.
