New Delhi. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has returned to India’s T20 team after 4 years. That too directly for tournaments like the World Cup. But his recent performance in T20 format has been poor. IPL 2021 is proof of this. Playing for Delhi Capitals (DC), Ashwin took only 7 wickets in 13 matches in this season of IPL. In the second qualifier held 2 days ago, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batsman Rahul Tripathi gave his team victory by hitting a six off Ashwin’s ball.
With this defeat, the dream of winning Delhi’s first IPL title at the top of the league stage was also shattered. Former Indian batsman and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has also raised questions on Ashwin’s lackluster performance. He has even said that he never takes a player like Ashwin in his T20 team.
Manjrekar said in a conversation with ESPN Cricinfo that we have spent too much time talking about Ashwin. I don’t think Ashwin isn’t a big force for any team in the T20 format and if you want Ashwin to change, I don’t think that’s going to happen. Because he has been like this for the last five-seven years.
The former Indian batsman said that I can understand that staying with Ashwin in the Test match. Because he is brilliant in this format. His not playing a single Test match in England was kind of a joke. But when it comes to IPL and T20 cricket, it is incomprehensible to spend so much time on Ashwin.
I would have kept Chahal or Chakraborty in the team instead of Ashwin: Manjrekar
Manjrekar further said that Ashwin bowls the same way in all three formats. I don’t keep a bowler like Ashwin in my T20Is. If I had got a turning pitch, I would have included bowlers like Yuzvendra Chahal or Varun Chakraborty in the team instead of Ashwin. Because it can get you wickets. He said that the franchise may show some interest in taking Ashwin in their team. He was no longer a wicket-taker in T20. I don’t think he will be taken in the team to stop runs.
