Rahul Dravid had a big hand in grooming Sanju’s cricket career

New Delhi. Hardly anyone would doubt Sanju Samson’s talent. When he is in his full form, he can easily play big shots against any bowler. But, despite having so much talent, he has played only 17 T20s and 11 ODIs for India in 8 years. Sometimes due to preference for other players, sometimes due to lack of consistency in his performance and sometimes due to injury, he is constantly in and out of Team India. Once again he is running out of Team India due to injury. Sanju Samson is expected to return to Team India in the 3 ODI series against Australia.

The first person to recognize Sanju Samson’s talent was Rahul Dravid, the current head coach of Team India. This wicket-keeper batter himself had disclosed this in a chat show. Sanju told how the 4 years he spent with Rahul Dravid in Rajasthan Royals and then Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) completely changed his game.

It was Dravid who first recognized Sanju’s talent.
Sanju Samson shared an anecdote related to this in the Breakfast with Champions show. Sanju made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals in 2013 itself. At that time Rahul Dravid was the captain of the team. It was he who first recognized the talent of 18-year-old Sanju and called him to give trials for Rajasthan Royals.

Sanju used to note everything about Dravid in his diary
Sharing the story related to the trials of Rajasthan Royals, Sanju had said, “In 2013, I had given trials for Rajasthan Royals. The batting I did those 2 days. Never did that in my entire career. Dravid sir was clapping on my every shot. That moment was special for me. In that season, I batted with Dravid sir in many matches. I was batting with him in a match. I had just come to the crease and hit a four off the first ball. Then Dravid came to me and said watch some balls and then play. However, the next ball was a bouncer, on which I again hit a four. After this Dravid came to me and said keep playing like this.

Didn’t get a chance to play World Cup 1 year ago, now hit fours of victory, this girl is very strong

4 years spent with Dravid most valuable for me: Sanju
Sanju had further told in this chat show that whatever Rahul Dravid used to say to me. I used to keep a diary with me at that time. Because I have a habit of forgetting. That’s why I used to note down every small or big thing he said in that diary and then tried to improve my game accordingly. Even today I have that diary. Apart from Rajasthan Royals, I also spent time with him in Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). The 4 years spent with him proved to be the most important for my career. Karun Nair, Shreyas Iyer, Mayank Agarwal and Rishabh Pant were present in Delhi Daredevils at that time. I remember one day he told all of us players that all of you will play for India one day. His words proved to be true.
