New Delhi. Sarfaraz Khan’s bat has been spewing runs in first class cricket for the last 14 innings. He is scoring runs for Mumbai at an average of more than 150. But this 24-year-old young batsman had to go to UP to reach here. His childhood was spent in Mumbai. But before the 2015-16 Ranji season, his father Naushad Khan decided to move to Uttar Pradesh. At that time he was 18 years old. There were tears in his eyes, but he could not stop this decision. Apart from under-14, under-16, he also made his first class debut for Mumbai. In such a situation, he had no desire to leave this city. But after that he returned to Mumbai again and played 600 to 700 balls daily to regain the lost form.
Talking to Cricinfo, he said, “When I was preparing this to go to UP, I don’t know why we decided to go to UP. So I was thinking one thing that during the Under-19 we were shown videos of some big players, who were in Mumbai Ranji T-shirts. They were either scoring centuries or lifting the trophy. He said that my dream was to play a century in Mumbai’s Ranji jersey.
good start like up
Sarfaraz Khan scored 155 runs against MP in the debut match for UP. But he could play only 3 matches in this season, as he was part of the Under-19 Indian team. The World Cup was to be held in the beginning of 2016. In this season, the team of UP could not reach the knockout. Mumbai, on the other hand, captured the trophy for the 41st time. In the next season, he could play only 5 out of 8 matches for UP and his average was less than 30.
I don’t want to play here
Sarfaraz Khan said that after this I told my father that now I should not play me here and there. If I will play now, then only from Mumbai, otherwise I will leave cricket. But returning to the Mumbai team was not easy. As per the BCCI rules, a player will have to go through a cooling period of one year, only then he will be able to play from Mumbai again. At the beginning of 2020, he once again got a place in the Mumbai team after 5 years. But he got out in the first innings after scoring 8 runs in 20 balls. He said that after scoring 8 runs, I felt that I would be out.
Confidence gained from an innings of 71 runs
But, when Mumbai came to bat again, Prithvi Shaw was injured. At the same time, 4 senior players Aditya Tare, Ajinkya Rahane, Siddhesh Lad and Suryakumar Yadav got out before 30 runs. He said that I wanted to stand there. He scored an unbeaten 71 off 140 balls. But his team lost. Karnataka fast bowlers took all 9 wickets. He told that I had been working with my father on my game against swing bowling for some time. I knew I could play it, I was confident. So I decided to stand on the wicket. But the wicket was such that it was not possible to score big. It was one of my best innings. It gave me a lot of confidence.
scored 928 runs in 6 matches
After this Sarfaraz Khan’s bat did not stop. He scored 928 runs at an average of 155 throughout the season including 301, not out 226, 177. When he has returned again in Mumbai. He is the highest run scorer batsman. He has scored more than 1600 runs in 14 innings. The average is 150. During this, he has hit 184 fours and 35 sixes. At the same time, no other batsman of the team has been able to score even 1150 runs.
I was an attacking player
Sarfaraz Khan told that he was an attacking player in the beginning. But many times due to this he lost his wicket early. This time I worked on it with my father. His father is also a coach. He told that I used to play 600 to 700 balls daily. If there was a T20 match, he would have played cut and pull in the nets. On the other hand, if there was a first-class match, he would try to leave the ball outside the stump as much as possible. If an attacking player has some patience, then he becomes more dangerous.
He said that in first class cricket, if you stay in the first hour, then no one can stop you from scoring runs. Mumbai’s team has reached the semi-finals in the current season of Ranji Trophy. They registered a big win over Uttarakhand in the quarterfinals by a record 725 runs. This is the biggest win in terms of runs in the history of first class cricket. Sarfaraz scored 153 runs in the first innings. He did not get a chance to bat in the second innings.
