In 12 matches, eight not out, 274 runs at an average of 68.50 and a strike rate of 200, we are talking about Dinesh Karthik emerging as the best finisher of the Indian Premier League 2022. Dinesh Karthik was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for this season. So far Dinesh Karthik has impressed a lot with his batting. Karthik has played an important role in achieving the biggest target in the last over and taking the team to the big target. Now the biggest question that has arisen is whether Dinesh Karthik should be selected in the Indian team for the T20 World Cup to be held in October-November? Team India’s former cricket Sunil Gavaskar has given his opinion about this and also told what he would have done if he was a selector.
Gavaskar and Dinesh Karthik shared the commentary box during the final match of the ICC World Test Championship in England last year. Gavaskar said on Sports Tak, ‘We did commentary together in the final match of the World Test Championship in England last year, before that we had spent a lot of time together, we were in quarantine. I know how committed he was to play T20 World Cup 2021 and 2022. He could not play the 2021 T20 World Cup, but the kind of game he has shown in IPL 2022 this year, if I was a selector, I would have definitely picked him in the team for the T20 World Cup to be held later this year.
Gavaskar further said, ‘Form is very important, it is said that form is temporary and class is permanent, but if a classy player is in form, then he must be selected in the team. The way he is batting these days, he should be selected in the team as a batsman and then wicketkeeping should be optional.
‘Don’t think about age and fitness’
Dinesh Karthik is 36 years old and Gavaskar said his age and fitness should not be a concern. He said, ‘You don’t think about his age, he does 20 overs of wicketkeeping and then also bats, that too in such hot conditions. They should be seen on the basis of their form. If we look at the wicketkeeper’s options, then KL Rahul is in good form, but when it comes to Rishabh Pant, his form is a bit shaken.
