New Delhi. Tension is high among Indian cricket fans after witnessing the performance of several ICC T20 World Cup-bound players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 campaign. While the team management is not panicking about the situation. If reports are to be believed, Shreyas Iyer is reportedly being groomed as a backup. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has until October 10 to make changes to the squad for this year’s T20 World Cup.
According to a report in Inside Sports, the source admitted that Shreyas Iyer is being looked at as a backup in a case where Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan’s form is at the expected level. Doesn’t even improve. A BCCI source said, “Yes, it is a matter of little concern but there are still a few matches left in the IPL. Let’s see if these players come in form. Hope this happens. Suryakumar is one of the run-scorers for India, so he is not a big concern at the moment. Ishan Kishan has also done well in Sri Lanka. Virat Kohli also spoke to him on Sunday and let’s see how it happens?
The source revealed, “We have Shreyas Iyer as a backup, if there is any concern, he can be added, but it is too early to say anything. Ishan Kishan is an important player and so are Suryakumar and others. There is no point in speculating.” While batsmen Suryakumar and Ishaan started the UAE leg of IPL season 14 on a disappointing note. All-rounder Hardik Pandya has not bowled a single over for Mumbai Indians since the resumption of the T20 league.
There are other batsmen in the team who can be used in the playing XI. There is no other all-rounder option available as a replacement for Hardik as of now. Though the names of Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur have been considered, the pair is yet to make it to the all-rounders’ category.
A BCCI source said, “Hardik is recovering well and Mumbai Indians has managed him well. How this will happen next, we will have to see. He is bowling in the nets so it is a good sign. Rohit is there, so he knows better how to handle him. You are talking about Hardik and he has no backup at the moment. Shardul and Deepak are good options but they are yet to prove themselves as regular all-round options in T20Is. That’s why Hardik is the best all-rounder right now.”
India captain Virat Kohli was also seen talking to Ishaan Kishan, who seemed upset with his poor form, after the recent match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. There are still few more weeks left for IPL season 14 to end. The board wants to wait for some time before taking a call on possible changes in the team.
He said, “The selectors have given us a team and it is very good on paper. Players go through such phases. Virat was not getting runs, but he scored two consecutive half-centuries. So, we will see how to go about it after IPL. The selectors will decide accordingly. There are three players on standby and the team management will decide accordingly. I don’t want to say much about the selection process.”
October 10 is the deadline for changes to be made. The next 10-12 days will be crucial for the players going for the World Cup battling poor form. Not just Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal and a few others are also waiting to land on T20 World Cup berths when the opportunity arises.
