Shreyas Iyer finds it difficult to play in the first Test against Australia
Iyer out of ODI series against New Zealand due to back injury
In his absence, a batsman can have a test debut.
New Delhi. Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the 3 ODI series against New Zealand due to back injury. Iyer had complained of stiffness in the back after the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram. Keeping this in mind, Iyer has been selected in the team for the first 2 Test series against Australia. The BCCI medical team has asked him to go to the National Cricket Academy. Looking at Iyer’s back injury, his chances of playing in the first 2 Tests against Australia are slim. However, the team management is still hopeful that he will be fit before the first Test starting in Nagpur from 9 February. For this reason, he has been retained in the Test team.
Meanwhile, if Shreyas Iyer’s injury does not heal in time, then his fellow batsman Sarfaraz Khan in the Mumbai team can be added to the Test squad. Sarfaraz has scored a century again in Ranji Trophy a day earlier.
It is difficult for Iyer to play in the first 2 Tests
A BCCI official told InsideSport, ‘Some more tests will have to be done to know how deep Iyer’s injury is. But from what we have come to know so far, it is difficult for him to play in the first 2 Tests against Australia. However, we still have time. If he recovers in time, then he will definitely play.
Suryakumar can have a test debut
If Shreyas Iyer is ruled out of the first 2 Tests against Australia, then Suryakumar Yadav is sure to get a chance to make his Test debut. Within 2 years of making his debut for India, Suryakumar became the number-1 batsman of T20 and has now also become the vice-captain of the team. He is also a part of the planning of the ODI World of the Indian cricket team. Suryakumar has played a lot of first class cricket. In such a situation, now his next attempt will be to confirm his place in the Test team.
Iyer confirmed his place in the middle order
The Indian team management has made up its mind to look beyond Ajinkya Rahane. In such a situation, India needs a strong batter in the middle order in the Test. Shreyas Iyer has almost confirmed his place by playing some good Test innings. However, he still struggles against the short ball. But, Suryakumar Yadav does not have any problem in playing the short ball. In such a situation, if Iyer is out of the Test series against Australia, then Suryakumar can have a Test debut and he can bat at number 5.
Regarding this, the BCCI official said that Rishabh Pant is not available for the Australia series. If Shreyas is also out of the series then it is Surya who is in line. For this reason, he was selected for the Test series against Australia.
Suryakumar’s recent performance in red ball cricket has been good. He played some Ranji matches for Mumbai. He scored 90 plus twice in 4 innings of Ranji Trophy.
What about Sarfaraz Khan?
Sarfaraz has scored runs in Ranji Trophy. But, he has not been able to perform like this for the India-A team. Recently India-A team went on Bangladesh tour. Sarfaraz’s performance was fading there. At the same time, he also scored 99 runs in 3 innings in the home series against New Zealand-A. In such a situation, he can be added to the team as a replacement for Shreyas Iyer. But it is difficult to play them.
