Singapore Open 2022: Saina Nehwal defeated World No. 9, in the quarterfinals after 15 months


New Delhi. The country’s star badminton player Saina Nehwal has entered the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open Super 500 badminton tournament by defeating the world’s ninth seed Chinese player Bing Jiao in the pre-quarterfinal match. Nehwal won the first round 21-19. But she fell behind 11-21 in the second round. The Indian star came back again in the third round and played a tough match and entered the quarter-finals by defeating the world’s ninth seeded player 21-17. Nehwal has reached the quarterfinals after almost 15 months.

Let us tell you that Bing Jiao is currently the world’s number nine female shuttler. At the same time, Nehwal is currently ranked number 24 in the World Women’s Singles Ranking. In such a situation, winning against Jiao is a big achievement for Nehwal. The next match of the Indian star will now be with Japan’s Aya Ohori in the quarter-final match. Ohori is currently ranked 30th in the world rankings.

Before the quarter-final match on Wednesday, Nehwal had defeated young Malvika Bansod 21-18 and 21-14 in the opening round match which lasted 34 minutes. With this victory, the former number one badminton player had also broken his losing streak in three consecutive matches.

Earlier today, two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and in-form HS Prannoy entered the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open Super 500 badminton tournament. Third seed Sindhu defeated world number 59 Vietnam’s Hui Lin Nguyen 19-21, 21-19, 21-18 in three games. After this victory, her next match will be against Han Yi of China.

At the same time, world number 19 Prannoy registered his second win in five weeks against world number four Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen. He won 14-21, 22-20, 21-18 in a match that lasted one hour and nine minutes. Prannoy will next face Kodai Naraoka of Japan.
