New Delhi. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the most successful captain of India. Dhoni, who made his debut for Team India in 2004, became the captain of the Indian team within three years. Under his captaincy, India won three ICC titles between 2007 and 2013. At the time when Dhoni took over the captaincy of Team India, there were one strong player present in the team. He got the captaincy of India just a few days before the T20 World Cup 2007. The selectors wanted to give opportunities to young players instead of seniors in the shortest format of cricket. Legendary players like Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly did not participate in the World Cup.
Apart from Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh were also contenders for captaincy in the team at that time. However, the Indian selectors expressed confidence in Dhoni. Former BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale was also part of the selection committee at that time. In an interview, Jagdale had said on Dhoni being made the captain, “Dhoni’s confidence was strong from the beginning.” Jagdale had talked to Dhoni about the team before the T20 World Cup. When Jagdale told Dhoni, this is a good team. On this Dhoni told him, “Sir, we will come after winning the World Cup”. Jagdale says that he was surprised to see Dhoni’s confidence.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni had to play his first match as a captain against Scotland. However, the first match was canceled due to rain. He defeated Pakistan for the first time under his captaincy.
