Sourav Ganguly steps down from ATK Mohun Bagan board of directors says IPL sources

New Delhi. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President and former Team India captain Sourav Ganguly has stepped down from the board of directors of Indian Super League (ISL) football club ATK Mohun Bagan, owned by industrialist Sanjeev Goenka. Conflict of interest could arise after well-known industrialist Goenka successfully bid for the Lucknow franchise of the Indian Premier League (IPL). As the controversy escalated, Ganguly had already decided to withdraw from the Mohun Bagan team.

Ganguly was a part of Atletico-Kolkata since the inception of ISL in 2014. The club was later renamed as ATK (Amar Tomar Kolkata) and later merged with the legendary club Mohun Bagan. Goenka’s RP-SG group on Monday bought the Lucknow team of IPL for a whopping amount of Rs 7090 crore.

A senior ICC source said on Thursday, “Yes, Sourav Ganguly has already sent a letter to the ATK Mohun Bagan management informing them that he will not be able to be a part of the club’s board of directors.” The reason for this is that the RP-Sanjiv Goenka group now owns the IPL team. So it could be a case of conflict of interest.

The source said, “It was a formality after the IPL bid was completed and Ganguly did the necessary work. It was not a case of conflict of interest till the RP-SG group did not succeed in the bid as they were not part of the IPL. Earlier, Goenka had told News18 that former India captain Ganguly would step down from the board of directors. Goenka had said, ‘I think he (ATK) will pull out of Mohun Bagan completely. Sourav has to announce about this only. I mean to say, sorry. I think I made haste.
