Colombo. Sri Lanka on Friday added 5 new players to its team for the T20 World Cup to be held in UAE and Oman. The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) selection committee included Pathum Nisanka, Minod Bhanuka, Ashen Bandara, Lakshan Sandakan and Ramesh Mendis in the squad, taking the total number of players to 23. On September 12, Sri Lanka announced 15 main players and four reserve players under the captaincy of Dasun Shanaka.
The SLC said that Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa has approved the inclusion of additional players in the team. “Lahiru Madushanka, who was in the original squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, will not accompany the team as he is recovering from an injury,” the SLC said. The ICC T20 World Cup is to be held from October 17.
The Sri Lankan team will leave for Oman on Saturday. Sri Lanka will start their campaign in this tournament from October 18. His first encounter is to be against Namibia. Former Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene has been appointed as the team’s consultant for the first round of the T20 World Cup.
