Sri Lanka to decide on hosting Asia Cup 2022 by July 27 amid economic crisis in the country

Sri Lanka has the hosting of the Asia Cup 2022. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) had handed over the hosting to Sri Lanka shortly before. The tournament is to start from August 27, but there is an economic crisis in Sri Lanka at this time, due to which the hosting may be snatched from Sri Lanka. However, Sri Lanka has received an ultimatum from the Asian Cricket Council to host the Asia Cup 2022.

Sri Lanka has been given time till July 27 to confirm whether they will be able to host the Asia Cup 2022 in the island nation amid the economic crisis that has led to widespread protests across the country. Sri Lanka is facing acute shortage of essential commodities and fuel due to rising inflation and depleting foreign exchange reserves. Several former cricketers including Arjun Ranatunga and Sanath Jayasuriya are protesting against the government.

A source close to the Asian Cricket Council told INDIA TODAY that ACC officials are in constant touch with members of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board, who are still optimistic about hosting the Asia Cup. “It will be difficult to say right now whether they can host the Asia Cup or not. What I know is that they are optimistic and very positive about this issue. Still time to take a call on that,” the source said. But at the same time they have been given a time limit to take a decision on the same as per the protocol.”
