‘Such a player is born in generations…’ Captain Jos Buttler said on Ben Stokes’ retirement from ODIs

New Delhi. All-rounder Ben Stokes has retired from the ODI format. He played his last international match in this format on Tuesday. Although he could not play any big innings, but the fans became very emotional and upset. Many sports lovers expressed surprise on this decision of Stokes, while some were sad. Meanwhile, England’s ODI and T20 captain Jos Buttler praised Stokes. Butler said that the lack of this prodigious all-rounder in the ODI format will always be missed.

England’s limited overs team captain Jos Buttler has said that Ben Stokes will be missed in the ODI format. Buttler described Stokes as a player born in generations while former captain Eoin Morgan called the all-rounder a true leader. Stokes, the hero of England’s 2019 World Cup win, has announced his retirement from ODIs, leaving the cricket world in a tizzy.

Ben Stokes played his last ODI against South Africa at his home ground in Durham, scoring only 5 runs. England lost in this match by 62 runs. Butler said after the match, ‘A player who plays like Ben is born one in generations. So it will be a challenge for us (ODI team) to do our best without him.

He said, ‘We will miss him and as an England fan it is like drinking a bitter sip. It is really sad that we will not get Ben’s services in this (ODI) format but the loss of ODI cricket will definitely benefit England in Test cricket.

Stokes will continue to play in T20s and lead the Test team. Former captain Morgan is also saddened by Stokes’ retirement from ODIs. “He is a true leader who assures that anything is possible,” he said. It is a great pleasure to play with him for so many years and sad to see him retire at the age of 31.
