New Delhi. Veteran batsman Virat Kohli has decided to leave the captaincy in this format after the T20 World Cup. However, he will lead the team in the T20 World Cup to be hosted by UAE and Oman starting next month. Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar, one of the great cricketers, has suggested names for the next captain and vice-captain of Team India. He has said that India has to play the T20 World Cup next year also, so one should not think of changing the captain too much.
Gavaskar said on Star Sports’ show ‘Cricket Connected’, ‘I think Rohit Sharma should be made the captain of India for the next two T20 World Cups. You can say that they (World Cup) are to be held within a year. Right now the T20 World Cup will start in UAE and Oman within a month and then the second one exactly a year from now. So clearly, you don’t want to change a lot of captains in the meantime. Rohit Sharma will definitely be my choice for Indian captaincy. The T20 World Cup will be played next year in October itself in Australia’s hosting.
He further said, ‘Then, I am looking at KL Rahul for the vice-captain. I will also consider Rishabh Pant’s name because the way he is leading the Delhi team full of star players is really impressive. Using players like Enrique Norkhia and Kagiso Rabada to make use of the better that he is changing the bowling in the T20 format, that really shows a smart captaincy. You always want a captain who can read situations and act on them quickly. So yes, Rahul and Pant are the two people I would look up to as vice-captains.
Many legends are also suggesting the name of Rohit Sharma because he is one of the best captains in the history of Indian Premier League (IPL). The 34-year-old has won 5 IPL titles for Mumbai Indians (MI), the most by any captain in the history of the league. On the other hand, the current captain of India Virat Kohli has not been able to win a single IPL trophy for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
