New Delhi. Australia’s star batsman David Warner may be in poor form right now but ODI-T20 team captain Aaron Finch said on Wednesday that he will only play as an opener in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Will play Warner hasn’t played any T20 internationals in over a year but Finch backed his opening partner. Finch said that he will open the innings in the T20 World Cup to be held in Oman and the United Arab Emirates from October 19. Due to poor form, Sunrisers Hyderabad has dropped him from the playing XI in the Indian Premier League this year.
Before leaving for the United Arab Emirates for the T20 World Cup, Finch said, ‘Yeah, definitely he is one of the best players to have played a match for Australia. According to ESPNcricinfo, he said, ‘I have no doubts about his preparations, no doubt that he would have liked to play for Hyderabad, but I know he is still practicing. He will be ready to play. ‘
Warner’s form is bad
Warner has not played any T20 International for Australia since September 2020. He could not play in the last 14 matches of the four series due to injury, rest and schedules clashing. In this season (both phases) of IPL, he has been able to score only two half-centuries in eight innings. Sunrisers Hyderabad removed him as captain during the first leg of the IPL season in India. Warner did not travel with the Australian team to the Caribbean and Bangladesh due to rest. In the second phase of the IPL, he scored zero and two runs in the first two matches, due to which Sunrisers’ team again did not give him a place in the playing XI.
Finch himself will play the tournament in July after undergoing surgery to repair his knee ‘cartilage’. He was initially not available for Australia’s two warm-up matches against New Zealand (October 18) and India (October 20) but Finch said he was confident he would be available to play in both matches. Finch said, ‘My recovery process has been good for the last two weeks, so there is every possibility that I will be fit to play.’
