Former England spinner Monty Panesar has said that the Indian cricket team can still reach the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. He also said that though many things will depend on head coach Ravi Shastri, mentor Mahendra Singh Dhoni and captain Virat Kohli for this. The Indian team has lost two consecutive matches in this tournament and the team has to play its next match against Afghanistan in some time from now. To keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive, India will have to win the match against Afghanistan at any cost. Panesar said that the Indian team can still reach the last four but the condition for this is that captain Virat Kohli, head coach Ravi Shastri and Dhoni will have to come together.
In a conversation with The Times of India, Panesar said, ‘India can still qualify. Teams can change the situation. But for this a lot will have to be done and everything will depend on Virat, Ravi and Dhoni. Virat, Ravi and Dhoni will have to unite. I believe that all three of them are not unanimous right now. People will remember Virat as a great batsman and big run chaser. But will always criticize him as a captain because he could not do anything when the team was in trouble. India will have to win their remaining three matches by a big margin so that their run rate can be good. Don’t think about more numbers now.
He further said, the team needs to perform 200 percent. Also one should pray that the results of the other teams are as per India’s wish. The toss has played an important role in this tournament. In UAE, the team that wins the toss first has the upper hand. Had India won the toss, things would have been different. Virat does not have the best playing XI at the moment. They seem to be lacking in confidence. Virat, Ravi and Dhoni will have to sit down and find a solution.
