T20 World Cup Virender Sehwag Slams India Decision to Demote Rohit Sharma Compares it With Sachin Tendulkar in 2007 ODI WC

New Delhi. Team India is facing a lot of criticism after losing the first two matches of its campaign of ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Virat Kohli & Co are on the verge of being ruled out of the tournament, as their chances of reaching the semi-finals are slim at this point in time. India lost its first match to arch-rivals Pakistan by 10 wickets. This was his first defeat against Pakistan in an ICC World Cup event. In the second match, India made some major changes in the batting order, as Suryakumar Yadav was already complaining of a back spasm. Suryakumar Yadav was included in the playing XI in place of Ishan Kishan.

Ishan Kishan opened the innings with KL Rahul, who demoted Rohit Sharma and captain Virat Kohli in the batting order. The move failed miserably for India, as they were restricted to just 110/7 in 20 overs. ‘Men in Blue’ lost this match by 8 wickets. Veteran India opener Virender Sehwag criticized India’s decision to send Rohit to No. 3 and compared it to Sachin Tendulkar during the 2007 ODI World Cup.

India made two mistakes during the 2007 World Cup
Virender Sehwag said that the Indian team made two mistakes during the 2007 World Cup. The first was when the then head coach Greg Chappell said that we need batting practice. Sehwag told Cricbuzz, “We were able to win 17 matches in a row chasing runs, but when the World Cup came, our coach said that batting practice has to be done. On this I said that first we win 2 matches, the remaining 6 matches will be left for improvement. But he flatly refused.”

Sending Sachin Tendulkar in the middle order was a big mistake
The great batsman elaborated on the second mistake committed by India and said that demoting Sachin Tendulkar in the middle order had not worked in his favor. He said, “The second mistake was that when the opening pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly were performing so well, before that the opening partnership of Sehwag and Sachin was also going well from 2003-06, then why they were broken ? Why is it said that if Sachin Tendulkar plays in the middle order, he can control the middle order. You already had three players to control – Yuvraj Singh, Rahul Dravid and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. So why did you need a fourth player to control the middle order.

He added, “When teams play poorly, you change your strategy and that’s why they play poorly. But the ones that are good and you forcefully change them, then the performance goes down further.”
