Laxman said, ‘I want a batsman like Iyer to bat outside his position. India have got five openers in this team and you know Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma are the frontrunners for this place. So Venkatesh Iyer needs to be fit in the team but not in the top order. He should bat at No.5 or No.6 and also bowl a few overs or more. He can be Hardik Pandya’s backup. You can develop Venkatesh Iyer into a utility all-rounder.
