Team India: County team Lancashire on Wednesday announced that they have signed India all-rounder Washington Sundar as their overseas player. Washington, who was ruled out of the league due to a hand injury while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022, is set to join the team after his rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
Path chosen to return to form
This will be his first stint in England’s domestic cricket and the second Indian after Cheteshwar Pujara to play county cricket. Pujara is with the India Test team ahead of their four-day tour match against Leicestershire. He scored 720 runs in 8 innings at an impressive average of 120 for Sussex in the first half of Division Two of the County Championship.
Returning after injury
Lancashire said, ‘Washington is following a period of rehabilitation with the BCCI after the injury. He will be available for the entire Royal London One Day Cup competition, and will be available for several LV County Championship games in July depending on fitness.
Washington said, “I am very excited to play county cricket for the first time with Lancashire Cricket. It will be a wonderful experience for me to play in English conditions and I can’t wait to play at Emirates Old Trafford. Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s Director of Cricket Performance, expressed excitement over Washington’s inclusion in the county squad for the current English domestic season. Lancashire are currently third in the County Championship division table behind Surrey and Hampshire with 108 points. They will resume red-ball cricket from 26 June following their Vitality Blast T20 matches against Gloucestershire.
