Thailand Open: Top badminton player Kidambi Srikanth, who played a key role in India’s historic Thomas Cup win recently, advanced to the men’s singles second round of the Thailand Open here on Wednesday while Olympic medalist Saina Nehwal failed to clear the first round hurdle.

Srikanth’s lethal form continues

In this BWF Super 500 tournament, 8th seed Srikanth won the first round match 18-21 21-10 21-16 over Bryce Leverdez of France in 49 minutes. He will now face qualifier Anhat Nguen of Ireland, who defeated Hans Kristian Solberg Wittings of Denmark 21-12 23-21 in the first round.

Saina out in first tour

London Olympics bronze medalist Saina lost to Korea’s Kim Ga Eun 21-11 15-21 17-21 in the first round of women’s singles in 50 minutes. Indian qualifier Ashmita Chaliha lost 10-21 15-21 to 7th seed Ratchanok Intanon in a first round match that lasted 29 minutes. Compatriot and another qualifier Akarshi Kashyap also lost 13-21 18-21 to Canada’s Mitchell Lee in the first round.

Malvika Bansod’s amazing

Malvika Bansod advanced to the second round with a 17-21 21-15 21-11 win over Maria Ultina of Ukraine, where she will face Lynne Kristofferson of Denmark. The mixed doubles pair of B Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa also crashed out in the first round. She went down to Japan’s eighth seeded pair of Yuki Kaneko and Misaki Matsutomo 17-21 17-21 in 34 minutes. B Sai Praneeth and Saurabh Verma also lost in the opening round of men’s singles. Praneeth lost 12-21 13-21 to Kantaphon Wangcharoin of Thailand and Saurabh 20-22 12-21 to Toma Junior Popov of France.
