Ever since becoming the main bowler of Chennai Super Kings, Deepak has been an important part of the Indian team in limited overs cricket. Deepak’s performance was good in IPL 2023 as well. It is a different matter that due to injury, Deepak could not play the entire 14 matches of the league stage. But he took 12 wickets in 9 matches at an average of 21.

Deepak Chahar also bowled well in the first qualifier against Gujarat Titans and took 2 wickets for 29 runs. Before the final of IPL 2023, Deepak told an interesting anecdote related to his captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in an interview that going against Stephen Fleming’s decision, Dhoni had decided to feed him in the 2018 IPL.

Deepak shared this anecdote on the Breakfast with Champions show. Deepak told, “When I met Mahi Bhai for the first time, I was batting, I came in the Pune team. Stephen Fleming chose me because of my batting. There was a practice match during the team camp. I had hit 5 sixes. But, the hamstring was injured. Then in that IPL season, I did not play many matches. The next year, Steven Smith became the captain of the Pune team and I remained the 12th man for the whole year.

Deepak Chahar further said, “2018 saw the return of Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni became the captain of the team and I was bought by Chennai in the auction. In the first match, planning was going on regarding playing XI. Coach Stephen Fleming wanted to feed me after a few matches. But going against Fleming’s decision, Dhoni had clearly said that Deepak would play all the 14 matches of the season. The CEO himself told me that when the captain, coach and the rest of the team management sat down to decide the team for the season, my name was written first.
