In the first match of the series, India’s head coach Rahul Dravid was buoyed by the prospect of Malik’s inclusion in the team. The team, however, did not give much indication about whether the right-arm pacer would get play time in the series against South Africa.

The Khaleej Times quoted Vengsarkar as saying, ‘However, Vengsarkar has no such doubts. He said, ‘Everyone has a different perspective on the game. But I think he deserves to play in the IPL after showing that kind of pace and accuracy. Also, when you are playing (international cricket) at home, this is the right time to test someone like him.
Amazing in IPL
In his first full season of playing in the IPL, Malik was at the helm for Sunrisers Hyderabad, taking 22 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 20.18 and an economy rate of 9.03. He was instrumental in taking wickets in the middle overs phase. He was also named as the rising player of the season at the end of the competition.
