London. Former captain Ricky Ponting has given Australian batsmen Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head technical tips to deal with the England bowling attack ahead of the second Ashes cricket Test (Ashes 2023) starting on Wednesday at Lord’s. Advice is offered. Australia won the First Test by 2 wickets at Abbeston, Birmingham, the first match of the new ICC World Test Championship cycle. Many of Australia’s players performed well individually but Labushen and Head were seen struggling in the first Ashes Test.
Ponting wants Labushen to focus on basics to achieve success and offered to spend time with the 28-year-old right-handed batsman. Ponting said on the ICC review, ‘I will wait for them to come and ask me. It’s not my place, I’m not on their coach list, I’m just a former player assessing what they’re doing. But I would love to talk to him (Labushen) about his batting because from what I have seen in the last few weeks, I came to know that he is complicating things a bit.
‘He needs to watch his old videos’
Ponting said, ‘I know he needs to trust and believe in the thing that has made him the number two batsman in the world in Test cricket over the years. I would tell him to watch some videos of the time when he was performing at his best and remember those things and do that again. Ponting also believes that Head will have to deal with the bouncers of England’s fast bowlers in the beginning.
‘He has to work with his mind’
This veteran batsman said, ‘First of all he has to understand that this will happen. He has to expect this to happen. I think he will have to work his mind on this. What is the best way for him to deal with this kind of bowling. Whether to target the bowlers. Whether to hook and pull against incoming balls like the body. Can he find a way to drop the ball? Can leave the balls a little better so that an effort is made to tire the bowler.
