Rohit Gurunath Sharma was born on 30 April 1987 in a poor family of Maharashtra. His mother Poornima is from Vizag. In such a situation, Rohit Sharma also knows how to speak Telugu. He performed brilliantly in the Harris and Giles Shield school cricket tournament and scored a century on debut as an opener.
Rohit Sharma made his List A debut for West Zone at Deodhar Troy against Central Zone in Gwalior in March 2005. It was his unbeaten 142 off 123 balls against North Zone in the same tournament that brought him into the limelight. After performances for India A in Abu Dhabi and Australia, he was selected in the 30-man probables list for the Champions Trophy, although he did not make it to the final squad. Earlier, he had also made his debut in Ranji Trophy. He made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in the 2006–07 season. However, he could not contribute much in the initial matches. But he scored 205 runs in 267 balls in the match against Gujarat.
