Victory over Australia but Dimuth Karunaratne told big challenge to face Pakistan

New Delhi. Sri Lanka’s Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne feels the Test win against Australia has boosted his team’s confidence. He also believes that facing Pakistan in the upcoming series will be more challenging than Australia. Karunaratne said as a reason that Pakistani players play spin well.

The 2-match Test series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will start from July 16, with matches to be played in Galle and Colombo. The Pakistani team is currently playing a warm-up match against Sri Lanka-XI. Recently, the two-Test series in Galle in Sri Lanka and Australia ended in a 1-1 draw.

During this, the dominance of the spinners of both the teams was seen. The Australian spinners took 18 out of 20 wickets in the first Test and registered a comfortable 10-wicket win. Prabhat Jayasuriya, who made his debut in the second Test, took 12 wickets and played a key role in helping Sri Lanka win by an innings and 39 runs.

34 years old Dimuth Karunaratne Said, ‘I think playing three times at the same venue is a big advantage for us and Pakistan does not have such an opportunity. However, we cannot underestimate the Pakistani team. They are very talented and we are in the Asian region. They have good teams in all formats. However, we are in a good position and hopefully we will give a good challenge to Pakistan.

He further said, ‘Pakistan is a strong team. He has many great players. I think it will be more challenging than Australia. He plays spin well.

Karunaratne also supported the senior players. Apart from Jayasuriya’s brilliant performance, senior batsman Dinesh Chandimal scored an unbeaten 206 runs in the second test match. This gave Sri Lanka a 190-run lead in the first innings of the second match. The Sri Lankan captain believes that this performance by the senior players is a good sign for him ahead of the Pakistan series.

He said, ‘I told Chandimal to play a big innings. He was not very successful in the last few years. When your senior player plays this kind of innings, it makes things easier for me as a captain. Angelo may fail, I may fail, but I know someone will play a good game for us. This is a good sign for the upcoming series.
