VVS Laxman: The whole world is in awe of the ‘bench strength’ of Indian cricketers but National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief VVS Laxman feels a huge ‘pool’ of world-class coaches and other support staff is ready to take Indian cricket to the next level. Doing so is equally important.
Laxman gave Gurumantra
Former Indian batsman Laxman took over the responsibility of NCA in December. Talking about his vision for Indian cricket at the BCCI’s Apex Council meeting on Thursday, he said, “It is my early days at the NCA but my vision is not limited to players only. As much as it is important to build strong ‘bench strength’, equally important is to build strong ‘bench strength’ of the coaches and other support staff.’
Strong support staff
“Given how professional the game has become and how much cricket is played these days, there is bound to be an increase in the demand for top level coaches and physio and scientific medical specialists,” he said. Laxman said, ‘It is our responsibility to start such a program in NCA which helps Indian talent to express themselves in this department as well.’
Laxman went on a Caribbean tour with the Indian Under-19 team soon after taking over at the NCA and most recently he was the coach of the Indian team that toured Ireland with Rahul Dravid.
