ODI debut of the man who made CSK the IPL champion
He was dropped from the team after the first ODI, what happened after all?
New Delhi. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings recently won the IPL title for a record 5th time. 20-year-old Mathisha Pathirana was instrumental in making Chennai the champion. This pacer, popularly known as Baby Malinga, took 19 wickets in 12 matches of IPL 2023. Mathisha was rewarded for her brilliant performance in the IPL and was selected in the ODI series against Afghanistan and Mathisha made her debut in the first ODI played against Afghanistan in Hambantota. But Mathisha could not perform brilliantly like IPL.
Mathisha Pathirana proved to be the most expensive in his debut ODI and gave away 66 runs in 8.5 overs. He got only 1 wicket in his hand. Mathisha, who bowled accurate yorkers and tight line length in IPL 2023, bowled 8 wides in the first ODI against Afghanistan. Afghanistan’s batsmen hit 4 fours and 2 sixes on his balls. Afghanistan won the first ODI by 6 wickets with 19 balls to spare.
Mathisha dropped from the team after 1st ODI
Afghanistan had achieved the target of 269 runs in 46.5 overs only. Ibrahim Zadran scored an inning of 98 runs for Afghanistan. After a poor performance in the debut ODI, he did not get a place in the playing-XI in the second ODI against Afghanistan being played in Hambantota and was dropped from the team.
Apart from Mathisha, three more players Angelo Mathews, Dusan Hemanta and Lahiru Kumara were also dropped from the playing-XI. Sadeera Samarawickrama, Mahish Tikshna, Vanindu Hasaranga and Dushmanta Chameera are playing in place of the 4 dropped players.
