In this episode, the meeting of the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which will select the selection committee, will be held after two days i.e. on 30 December. On this day, this committee will discuss the names of the shortlisted candidates and it is quite possible that BCCI will announce the new selection committee in the first week of January. Till then, the BCCI has asked the selection committee headed by Chetan Sharma to work and the same committee will pick the Indian team for the series against Sri Lanka in January.
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting of former Indian cricketers Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe and Sulakshana Naik can be held on December 30 and the new selection committee will be elected on this day itself. However, no formal information has been revealed from the BCCI on this issue so far. But, it is believed that the new selection committee will be finalized in this CAC meeting itself. After this, BCCI will make a formal announcement about it.
The Times of India quoted BCCI sources as saying that the current selectors were asked to work till Christmas. But, the new selectors could not be elected till then and the Indian team had to be announced for the home series against Sri Lanka. For this reason, the BCCI has asked the current selectors to fulfill this responsibility for a few more days. Apart from selecting the Indian team, the selectors are also keeping an eye on the Ranji Trophy matches.
Let us tell you that after the Indian team’s defeat in the T20 World Cup, the BCCI had sacked the selection committee headed by Chetan Sharma. However, Chetan Sharma and Harvinder Singh have applied for the post of selectors again while the tenure of Devashish Mohanty and Sunil Joshi has ended.
Who can be the new chief selector?
According to media reports, former Team India fast bowler Venkatesh can be the chairman or chief selector of the new selection committee of BCCI. He is leading in this race. According to BCCI sources, Venkatesh is the most skilled cricketer to have applied for the post. He is likely to be named as the new president soon. Sources further told InsideSport that the BCCI may include a T20 expert as a selector in the new committee.
53-year-old Venkatesh Prasad has played 33 Tests and 161 ODIs for India. He has taken a total of 290 international wickets. A source close to top BCCI officials said, ‘The new selection committee will be announced by the end of this month. Venkatesh Prasad is the most experienced of the former veterans who have applied for the role. There has been no formal discussion about his name, but there is every possibility of him being elected as the new president.
How can the new selection committee be?
Venkatesh Prasad can be the chairman of the new selection committee. He can become a part of the new committee as a representative of South Zone. The name of Salil Ankola is coming out from West Zone. If he gets the support of the new BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar, then he can join the new committee. At the same time, SS Das from East Zone can be a part of the committee. At the same time, the names of Maninder Singh, Nikhil Chopra and Atul Vasan are doing the rounds from the North Zone. At the same time, Nayan Mongia is considered to be the strongest contender from the Central Zone.
