KKR has 5th win in 11 matches
Dhawan played half-century innings
New Delhi. Punjab Kings, captained by Shikhar Dhawan, were defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR vs PBKS) by 5 wickets in the 53rd match of IPL. KKR has 10 points from 5 wins in 11 matches and has reached number five in the points table while Punjab Kings are at number seven with 10 points. Right now the hopes of all the teams reaching the playoffs are alive. After the defeat, Shikhar Dhawan said that his team made a good score on a difficult pitch, but the Kolkata Knight Riders team performed better and won the match. Dhawan said that he is missing a good off-spinner.
Chasing Punjab’s target of 180, KKR rode on Nitish Rana (51), Andre Russell (42) and Jason Roy (38) to post 182 for five on the last ball. Rinku Singh (21 not out in 10 balls) gave victory to the team by hitting a four on Arshdeep Singh on the last ball. Russell hit three sixes and three fours in 23 balls. Punjab had earlier shared a 53-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Jitesh Sharma (21) of captain Shikhar Dhawan (57 off 47 balls, nine fours, one six), Shah Rukh Khan (21 not out in eight balls), Harpreet Brar. (17 not out in nine balls) and Rishi Dhawan (19 runs in 11 balls) scored 179 runs for seven wickets.
Varun Chakraborty and Harshit Rana took wickets at regular intervals
For KKR, Varun Chakraborty (26/3) and Harshit Rana (33/2) prevented Punjab from building big partnerships by taking wickets at regular intervals. Dhawan said after the match, ‘Not feeling well. We lost the match and it was not an easy wicket to bat on and I think we scored well. In the end he played well. Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh had to prevent KKR from scoring six runs in the last over to win. He took the match till the last ball but could not save his team from defeat.
‘Last over was brilliant’
Praising Arshdeep, Dhawan said, ‘The last over was brilliant, great effort from Arshdeep and the way he has come back after the last match, all credit goes to him. It was interesting that he took the match till the very last ball. It’s been really cool. I think we don’t have a good off-spinner. When left-handed batsmen come in, we have a leg-spinner from one end and a left-arm spinner from the other end. That’s why I think we are wasting a few more runs. Dhawan played an inning of 57 runs in 47 balls. This was Shikhar Dhawan’s third half-century with the bat in this IPL. Andre Russell, who scored 42 off 23 balls, was adjudged the player of the match.
