The captain who won the World Cup for Pakistan played only 5 ODIs
Due to a mistake in 2017, a strict ban of 5 years was imposed
New Delhi. Made his first class debut 5 days before the completion of 15 years and after 4 years made Pakistan win the World Cup under his captaincy. Despite this, he could play only 5 ODIs for Pakistan. This is the story of right-handed batsman Khalid Latif. In 2004, under Khalid’s captaincy, Pakistan won the Under-19 World Cup by defeating the West Indies. Then this was the first time when Pakistan won the Under-19 World Cup. However, Pakistan had lost the World Cup trophy itself.
After 4 years of this historic victory, Khalid got a chance to play for the senior team of Pakistan. But, his ODI career could not progress beyond 5 matches. After all, what happened that Khalid Ahmed’s career got a break. Why he could not play too many matches and what is this star captain doing today?
The Under-19 World Cup trophy went missing
Khalid Ahmed recently spoke openly in Nadir Ali’s podcast on winning the Under-19 World Cup, being out of the Pakistan team and all the issues related to the ban. Khalid Ahmed gave an interesting reason for missing the Under-19 World Cup trophy. He told, no one expected that Pakistan would win the Under-19 World Cup. Before this tournament, the Indian team had come here and had defeated us. Everything was happening on him. In the meanwhile we won the World Cup, then the talk started about us. But, when we were returning from Dhaka, the trophy was lost in Dubai. The World Cup itself had disappeared. The whole media was standing, he asked where is the trophy. Then it came to know that the trophy has been misplaced somewhere in the luggage. After much effort, the trophy came to Pakistan after 25 days.
Despite winning the Under-19 World Cup, Khalid had to wait 4 years to make his debut for Pakistan and within 2 years he was dropped from the ODI team and could not make a comeback. Khalid Ahmed played only 5 ODIs for Pakistan. After this, he was also dropped from the T20 team in 2010 and then returned after many years. But since 2016, he has not played a single T20.
Khalid was banned due to spot-fixing
Khalid Latif suffered another setback in 2017 after being dropped from the Pakistan team. In 2017, he was banned for 5 years by the Anti-Corruption Tribunal for being involved in spot-fixing and was also fined one lakh Pakistani rupees. He played for Islamabad United and was accused of 6 major breaches under the PCB’s anti-corruption code. He was found guilty in the investigation. After this ban, his Pakistan’s domestic cricket game was also banned.
