Chengdu. With star table tennis player G Sathiyan winning both his singles matches, India stunned second seed Germany 3-1 in the group stage of the World Table Tennis Championships here on Sunday. Sathiyan got one of these two wins against world number nine player Dang Qiu. The world number 37 Indian first defeated Duda Benedict (ranked 36) and then defeated his higher-ranked Qiu of Germany.

Sathiyan made a strong comeback after losing the first two games in both the matches. He defeated Benedict 11-13, 4-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-9 and Kiyu 10-12, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-9. Sathiyan Said, ‘The match against Qiu was definitely very tough. He is among the top 10 players. It was also a very challenging match. However, India’s number two player Harmeet Desai lost 1-2 to Qiu in the second singles. But after this, Manav Thakkar gave victory to his team by defeating Ricardo Walther of higher ranking.

India (ranked 17th) beat Uzbekistan in their opening group match on Saturday and need to finish in the top two to qualify for the pre-quarterfinals. In the women’s draw, India registered their first win of the group stage with a 3-0 win over Czech Republic. The Manika Batra-led team had lost to Germany on Saturday. Manika defeated Hana Matelova 3-1 in the first singles. After this, Akula Sreeja and Diya Chitale registered victories over Marketa Sevsikova (3-0) and Katarina Tomanovska (3-1) respectively.
