The Lucknow camp, which was to begin on Wednesday and for which women wrestlers were called earlier this month, was canceled by the Sports Ministry.

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president and former sprint star PT Usha urged them to ‘come forward and voice their concerns’. Meanwhile, the WFI has decided to hold an emergency general council meeting in Ayodhya on Sunday to discuss the allegations, according to Wrestling Federation of India assistant secretary Vinod Tomar. Earlier on Thursday, the dharna venue was packed with international wrestlers and Dangal wrestlers from Haryana, UP and Rajasthan as well as farmer leader Narendra Tau. It is learned that women wrestlers had told Vinesh about similar incidents in the past as well, and when appeals to hold the national camp elsewhere instead of Lucknow went unheeded, she decided that ‘now It’s enough.’

Talking to reporters, Vinesh Phogat said, ‘Yesterday (Wednesday) there were 2 to 3 girls who were ready to talk about sexual harassment with evidence. Today I can say that there are 5 to 6 female wrestlers who are ready to talk and come forward with proof of sexual harassment. I also got calls from women wrestlers from Kerala. The people of Maharashtra are also saying that they too have had similar bad experiences. Vinesh, along with Bajrang and other members of the protesting group, met officials of the Sports Ministry and said that the wrestlers would not leave the protest site until the WFI president was sacked.

Babita said, ‘I have assured them that the government is with them. I will try to ensure that their issues are resolved today itself. Star wrestler Bajrang Punia is married to Sangeeta Phogat. On Wednesday, the Sports Ministry had given WFI chief Bribhushan Sharan Singh and the federation 72 hours to explain the allegations, failing which action would be initiated as per the provisions of the National Sports Development Code. Meanwhile, sources have revealed that the Sports Ministry has asked Brij Bhushan Sharan to step down. If he does not change his mind, he will be sacked.
